Artists-in-Residence Programs for Synagogues

Some quotes about Peter & Ellen's Artist-in-Residence visits...

A visit to your synagogue can include one event or several. You can choose from the following:

TERRIFIC TOT SHABBAT or FABULOUS FAMILY SHABBAT

Join Peter & Ellen for a ruach-filled Shabbat service for the young members (and their parents) of your congregation! Through upbeat songs, simple prayers and meditations, engaging stories and bibliodramas, and an energetic march with the Torah, your young families will have the opportunity to experience the beauty and magic of Shabbat. We will bless each other, we will share our special Shehecheyanu moments with each other, we will say our Sabbath prayers together, we will dance with the Torah and learn from the weekly parshah, we will say a prayer for our friends and loved ones who are in need of healing, and after singing our final song, we will bid each other Shabbat Shalom! It is guaranteed to be a memorable experience for the young children and families in your congregation.
All are invited, regardless of their knowledge of Judaism. In fact, all that is required is a willingness to "pray" with your child or grandchild and a desire to celebrate the beauty of the Sabbath. Peter & Ellen's interactive Shabbat experience will help the young families in your congregation become familiar with the key points of the Shabbat service, while giving them an upbeat and thoroughly accessible way to explore Judaism.

HAVDALAH SERVICE & FAMILY CONCERT

Invite your young families to come to a Saturday early evening concert, in their pajamas! First we will gather for a ten minute Havdalah service during which we will say goodbye to the Sabbath bride. After singing the Havdalah blessings for the full Kiddush cup of wine, the sweet spices of the besamim, and the lights of the twisted Havdalah candle, we dip the candle in the wine to extinguish it and we sing Shavua Tov and Eliayu Hanavi. Then you are all invited to a concert full of song and laughter and dancing and music-making with all of the other young families in your congregation. What a terrific way to build community and help your young families feel connected to your synagogue!

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL WORSHIP-THROUGH-SONG PROGRAM

The weaving of song through worship, sometimes upbeat, sometimes quiet and reflective. That describes the tefillah experience that your religious school students will have when Peter & Ellen lead them in an interactive musical worship experience. They will explore prayer through song, movement, laughter and quiet moments of meditation. Your students will learn that they can pray every day and that G-d is waiting to hear from them. They will return to their classrooms with a new model for how to engage in the art of prayer.

SONGWRITING 1-2-3

Peter & Ellen offer a workshop that combines text* study and songwriting. Prior to their visit to your congregation,
they will work with your religious school teachers to choose a text to be studied. This will allow your students to
have an opportunity to study and discuss this text in advance of the songwriting workshop. During their visit,
Peter & Ellen will guide your students in crafting lyrics and then determining a musical style that best suits the
lyrics written. By the conclusion of the workshop, your students will have written a completed song, with a chorus and
three verses. Several weeks after Peter & Ellen's visit, they will send your cantor and/or music teacher sheet music from the songwriting session and a CD of the song. This will enable your students to "own" the song and remember the experience for many years to come!
This workshop works with young children all the way through adults. Peter & Ellen adapt the songwriting session to meet the needs of the age group. The song is the icing on the cake; what is most important is the process of writing the song as a group, building on the strengths that are revealed when people work together with a common purpose. *Torah portions can be explored; the song can also be based on a theme or subject area that your students have been studying in religious school.

GUEST CANTORIAL SOLOISTS FOR ADULT SHABBAT SERVICES

Peter & Ellen would love to share their musical talents at a regular "adult" Shabbat service. Sharing traditional melodies, their own compositions (many of which have been sung and recorded by other Jewish performers and recording artists and included in Jewish Song Anthologies published by Transcontinental Publications), and songs written by other contemporary Jewish songwriters, Peter & Ellen will invite your congregation to participate in a worship experience full of enthusiasm and kavanah!

GUEST CONDUCTOR WITH YOUR ADULT AND/OR CHILDREN'S CHOIR

Does your synagogue have an adult and/or children's choir? If so, Peter & Ellen will work with your choir director, religious school music teacher, song leader, cantorial soloist, or cantor prior to their visit so that your choir(s) can rehearse and be prepared to sing with them during your Shabbat service. Music will be sent several months prior to their visit so that your choir(s) can rehearse and be prepared to sing with them. Peter & Ellen are very glad to help support, nurture, and encourage the choir members, young and old, who participate in making beautiful music for your congregation.

Contact us today if you have further questions, we are happy to work
with you to develop a visit that will meet your program and budget needs.
